“Xeikon is acknowledged in the marketplace as an innovator of digital solutions for document printing as well as labels & packaging applications,” says Michael Ring, VP of Worldwide Marketing. “We were the first to bring production digital color printing to market, the first to offer high-resolution imaging (1200 DPI), the first to offer 50 cm (19.7 inch) web width (B2 format) and the first to offer the benefits of full rotary technology. The driving force behind all this innovation is the depth of our customer relationships – and the fact that we are an open and approachable company at all the levels of our organization.”

Ring continued, “Working closely together with our customers on a daily basis enables us to truly understand the challenges they are facing — and to focus on innovations that will help grow their business. At Xeikon, we’re continuously taking these insights back into the lab and introducing solutions to help our customers. What visitors will see at Xeikon’s drupa booth is the latest in this series of innovations.”

What’s on show at drupa 2012?

Taking center stage will be two models of the new Xeikon 8000 Series of digital presses, which have been developed to meet the specific needs of the document printing market. The new series makes Xeikon’s highest image quality, highest productivity and lowest running costs available across its entire duplex product line. This enables all users – from smaller short-run print shops to large print service providers – to take advantage of the company’s top-end technology.

Live print-runs of DM pieces

The Xeikon 8800 will run live print-runs of two high-end direct marketing pieces. The first is called Modo, which was a part of a retail marketing campaign simulation for a customer loyalty program of the well-known fashion retailer. The new 8000 Series offers the print quality and format flexibility to truly make this application piece stand out.

The second application is called Avancé, a personalized, high quality full-color print application for private banking. Live demonstrations of this application will clearly show the improved productivity and wide automation possibilities of the new 8000 series.

The Xeikon 8800 will be set up in a roll-2-roll configuration with a Hunkeler inline perforation module DP6. Xeikon’s IPDS workflow solution, which can be integrated with the new 8000 Series, has been designed to help operators manage their production while they develop transactional and personalized campaigns in full color. The finishing of the printed rolls will be carried out by Xeikon’s Aura partners, Hunkeler and Horizon, on their respective booths.

The Xeikon 8500, the entry-level model within the Xeikon 8000 Series, will offer visitors a glimpse of the possibilities with integrated communications. Visitors will be led through an example of experience marketing where Xeikon will print a customized poster for each visitor. This poster will be a part of a full cross-media campaign moderated and monitored by Xeikon’s Aura partner, Inventive Designers.

Application-specific Suites

Over the recent years, Xeikon has developed a number of label production solutions for specific market segments including the SA Label Suite for the self-adhesive market and the Heat Transfer Label Suite for the heat transfer market. These Label Suites comprise print engines, substrates, workflow, toners and finishing elements. At the show Xeikon will introduce its third dedicated Suite, the Folding Carton Suite, developed specifically to meet the needs of the folding carton market.

Live Demonstrations of the Self-Adhesive Label and Folding Carton Suites

The SA label Suite will be demonstrated on the booth using a five-color Xeikon 3300 with an inline DCoat 330 finishing unit. In addition to experiencing Xeikon’s 1200 DPI image quality, visitors will have the opportunity to see how the ‘one-pass’ opaque white toner can create the much desired ‘no-label or label-less look’ on transparent films. The full rotary technology incorporated in the Xeikon 3300, combined with its variable repeat length will also be at work. As a result, the labels will be printed at maximum speed, regardless of the size of the labels or the number of colors used. The full power of integrating print and finishing to deliver higher productivity – and improved profitability – will also be demonstrated.

The Folding Carton Suite will be demonstrated using a Xeikon 3500 in a roll-to-sheet configuration with web finishing module (WFM) and cutter, with sheets collected in a stacker. A variety of folding carton applications for different markets (including pharmaceutical and cosmetic) will be demonstrated at the show.

ThermoFlexX unveiled

Also unveiled at the show for the very first time will be ThermoFlexX, Xeikon’s new product line of imagers for digital imaging of flexographic and letterpress printing plates. With the launch of ThermoFlexX, Xeikon now offers its customers solutions for conventional flexo printing as well as digital printing (through the Xeikon 3000 Series of labels and packaging presses), further reinforcing the company’s commitment to the label and packaging markets.

Live demonstrations of two products of the ThermoFlexX range will be conducted at the Xeikon booth at drupa.

Next generation of basysPrint UV-Setters introduced

basysPrint will introduce its next generation of 4-up and 8-up CtP UV platesetters for the digital exposure of UV-sensitive offset printing plates. Incorporating the latest state-of-the art optics, the new basysPrint UV-Setter Series 460x and Series 860x offer customers the choice of exposure resolutions of 1500dpi or 2400 DPI. The unique flatbed design enables digital imaging of a wide variety of plate sizes – from formats as small as 200mm x 200mm (7.8 x 7.8 inches) up to a maximum of 680mm x 830mm (26 x 32 inches) with the 460x, and 940mm x 1150mm (27 x 45 inches) with the 860x. The unique dual plate loading option also offers the flexibility of loading and imaging two plates at the same time. This allows the systems to image up to 120 plates per hour (with a plate size of 470 x 650 mm) improving productivity significantly.

Also being shown is the new family of VLF Computer-to-Plate (CtP) UV platesetters for the digital exposure of UV-sensitive offset printing plates, Comprising three models, Manual (M), Semi-Automatic (SA) and Automatic (MCA), the new VLF Series is capable of exposing plates of up to 1485mm x 2100mm in size. Each model is equipped with the new flEXpo (Flexible Exposure) option, a unique method of exposing plates in a much more efficient way. Incorporating state-of-the-art optical modules, the new VLF family also delivers unsurpassed exposure quality with resolutions of up to 2400dpi.

Xeikon further reinforces commitment to the labels and packaging markets

Eede, The Netherlands — March 7, 2012 – Xeikon will unveil ThermoFlexX, its new product line of reliable, high-quality, digital imagers for flexographic and letterpress platemaking, at drupa 2012, taking place in Düsseldorf, Germany from May 3-16, 2012. With the launch of ThermoFlexX, Xeikon now offers solutions for flexographic platemaking as well as digital printing (through the Xeikon 3000 Series of digital color presses), further reinforcing the company’s commitment to the labels and packaging markets.

Earlier this year, Xeikon had announced the acquisition of FlexoLaser, a leading and respected manufacturer of computer-to-plate (CtP) devices for both flexo and letterpress applications. Xeikon selected FlexoLaser due to its excellent product design capabilities and best-in-class image quality. At the same time, Xeikon also announced that it had acquired the rights to the ThermoFlex trademark from Eastman Kodak Company.

Digital and Flexo: a perfect match

At drupa 2012, the company will unveil its product line of imagers for flexographic and letterpress printing plates, which will be marketed under the ThermoFlexX product line. Xeikon is currently transferring production of the imager systems to its prepress facilities in Belgium. Here, the company will continue developing the technology to raise the quality bar further.

“Xeikon has been manufacturing industry-leading computer-to-plate solutions for more than 15 years,” says Jeroen Van Bauwel, Director of Product Management at Xeikon. “With ThermoFlexX, we’re expanding our CtP business into the flexographic and letterpress markets, further reinforcing Xeikon’s commitment to the labels and packaging markets. Xeikon is the only player on the market who is able to offer its customers solutions for both flexo platemaking and digital labels and packaging printing. Digital printing provides the perfect answer for short and medium runs and quick turnaround times, while the long runs will continue to rely on flexographic printing.”

Up to 5080 DPI resolution

Comprising leading-edge hardware and workflow software, the ThermoFlexX product line of imagers is based on mature technology and proven digital workflow solutions. It enables customers to consistently produce high-quality digital flexographic and letterpress plates at resolutions of 2540 or 5080 DPI. With this resolution, the product is technology-ready to raise the quality level of output to the newest industry standards.

Unique range of benefits

The ThermoFlexX solution comes with a range of unique benefits. Advanced clamping design allows plates to be mounted directly on to the drum, while uniquely designed vacuum sliders offer the flexibility to use plates of any width. This is highly beneficial to operators as there is no need to cut the plates to fit a dedicated vacuum zone thus allowing the use of cut-off scraps. The ThermoFlexX solution also features ergonomic plate mounting and its hybrid drum offers flexibility of holding plates in place either by vacuum or by magnetics.

Worldwide network for local service and support

Xeikon’s worldwide service network will provide local support for the full range of ThermoFlexX products. Sales of the product will be conducted via Xeikon’s authorized dealer network.

Come and see the new ThermoFlexX line up at drupa 2012

Visitors to the Xeikon booth at drupa 2012 will have the opportunity to see the new ThermoFlexX solution first hand. Xeikon will exhibit in Hall 8A, Booth B44.

New Toner Optimization Mode drastically reduces running costs and enables printers to complement and/or compete with alternative print solutions

Eede, The Netherlands — March 7, 2012 – Xeikon, an innovator in digital color printing technology, will unveil its new Xeikon 8000 Series of digital color presses at drupa 2012, taking place in Düsseldorf, Germany from May 3-16, 2012. The new series of presses, which has been developed specifically for the document printing market, makes Xeikon’s highest image quality, highest productivity, and lowest running costs available across its entire duplex-printing product line.

This enables all users — from smaller short-run print shops to large print service providers — to take advantage of the company’s top-end technology. Comprising three models, the Xeikon 8500, Xeikon 8600 and Xeikon 8800, the new series also offers Xeikon users an upgrade path for growth. In addition, all models come equipped with Xeikon’s new Toner Optimization Mode (TOM), which depending on the application can reduce toner usage up to 50%. This Toner Optimization Mode will allow users to reduce their running costs significantly, while enabling them to compete with lower quality printing solutions for smaller job sizes and reprints.

With the launch of the Xeikon 8000 Series, all three of Xeikon’s current duplex presses (Xeikon 5000, Xeikon 6000, and Xeikon 8000) will be standardized onto the 8000 platform. This optimizes the portfolio and provides upgrade and trade-in possibilities to current users of the Xeikon 5000 or Xeikon 6000 presses. The Xeikon 5000, which is the entry-level model, mainly active in lower volume direct mail work and short-run commercial print, will be superseded by the 8500. Similarly, users of the Xeikon 6000 now have an upgrade path to the new platform via the Xeikon 8600. The Xeikon 8000 is superseded by the Xeikon 8800, bringing productivity improvements not available before.

Customer-driven innovation

“The development of the new Xeikon 8000 Series is a good example of customer-driven innovation,” says Danny Mertens, Xeikon’s Director of Segment Marketing, Document Printing. “Staying close to customers on a daily basis enables the Xeikon team to really understand our customer’s true needs. At the top of their list are image quality and format flexibility, and the need to remain profitable. We took this feedback directly back to the lab, took all the advantages of the existing 8000 press and bundled them into a new expanded series. This enabled us to bring all the advantages of our top-end technology to all our customers — from the smaller, short-run print shops to the large print service providers.”

All models now feature the same high precision LED-array imaging technology used in the current Xeikon 8000 press, which combines true 1200 DPI resolution and 4-bit per spot color depth to deliver the finest commercial print quality on the market today and offers the ideal solution for microtext applications. In addition, the move up from mono-roll image development to duo-roll image development delivers much smoother solids.

Both the 8500 and 8600 models offer significant speed increases compared to their predecessors. Customers who upgrade to the 8500 will gain a speed upgrade from 130 A4/137 letter-size pages per minute (ppm) to 160 A4/170 letter-size ppm. Users upgrading to the 8600 would see a speed upgrade from 160 A4/170 letter-size ppm to 195 A4/207 letter-size ppm. All machines are speed upgradable in the field. Running costs are also considerably lower with up to 20% savings on usage part costs, mainly related to the improvements in usage parts lives. All three models, including the Xeikon 8800, come equipped with the new X-800 Digital Front End, which features a brand new state-of-the-art user interface called MyPress, built from the ground up from the input of operators in the field.

All presses in the new series retain the full format flexibility that Xeikon has become renowned for over the last 15 years. Since 1997, Xeikon presses have been able to print on webs up to 50cm (19.7 inches) wide and, due to the full rotary imaging process, unlimited in length, enabling B2 paper size formats which is a very important functionality for many print shops.

“Many of our customers are printing a huge variety of different applications and format flexibility of the Xeikon press gives them a real advantage,” continues Mertens. “Very often they are smaller print shops who are very dedicated to a certain set of customers. The Xeikon 8500 is the ideal solution for them as it offers offset image quality at full width and a lower running cost. It is also the perfect upgrade path for future growth for those with older Xeikon machine generations.”

Supporting the full breath of document printing applications

The new Xeikon 8000 series supports the whole range of document printing applications with specific advantages for each:

Transactional: With one engine print capacity of up to 300,000 pages per day in native IPDS mode in five colors.

Textbook printing: Handles ultra-light stock (down to 40 GSM/27 lb. text) and the 1200 DPI resolution allows for fine print of technical drawings and small characters.

Short run commercial print, point of sales and wallpaper production: Prints on a B2 format and is unlimited in length.

Photo book printing: Runs offset print quality on a large range of substrates without the need for pretreatment. Up to 504 mm/19.8 inch imaging width and unlimited in length provide a lot of possibilities for special formats, covers and dust-jackets.

Direct marketing: Workflow possibilities that fit seamlessly in today’s multichannel communication context. Paper is increasingly becoming a VIP medium for marketers because it creates privacy time with the consumer. The Xeikon 8000 Series offers possibilities in print quality and format flexibility to make printed materials stand out and create true stopping power.

Toner Optimization Mode reduces running costs drastically

All new models in the new Xeikon 8000 Series come equipped with Xeikon’s new Toner Optimization Mode (TOM). The new mode is operator selectable on the press via the new X-800 MyPress GUI. Through TOM, different tone curves are applied when transmitting pixel data to the imaging system. As a result, customers can save up to 50% on their toner usage, drastically reducing their running costs. This flexibility allows Xeikon customers to compete with lower quality printing solutions for smaller jobs sizes and reprints as needed and it also enables them to find the right balance between print quality and price based on the requirements of a specific job.

“TOM is another example of innovation being driven by our customers,” says Mertens. “Typically, they are printing a mix of applications ranging from lower-value transactional work to high-value direct marketing jobs. There’s a lot of short run, low-end jobs for which there’s often no real need to deliver the top-end image quality. High speed inkjet is not an alternative due to startup costs and application limitations. TOM now gives our customers this flexibility and reduces their running costs significantly. Our customers are also seeking out ways to offer their clients a choice on print quality. TOM now enables them to offer their customers an alternative print quality at a different price.”

All three models of the new Xeikon 8000 Series will start shipping in September 2012. Starting at drupa, Xeikon will discontinue the production of the Xeikon 5000plus, Xeikon 6000 and Xeikon 8000 models.

Live demos of product showcased at drupa 2012

Customers visiting the Xeikon booth at drupa 2012 will have the opportunity to experience the new products first hand. The Xeikon 8800 will be running a high-end direct marketing job called Modo, a loyalty card program and a mission critical private banking application called Avancé. The Xeikon 8500 will be running a state of the art example of integrated communication possibilities. Xeikon will exhibit in Hall 8A, Booth B44.

Xeikon launches new suite for label and packaging markets

Eede, The Netherlands — March 7, 2012 – Xeikon, an innovator in digital color printing technology, today announces its new Folding Carton Suite, which will be demonstrated during drupa 2012, taking place in Düsseldorf, Germany, May 3-16, 2012.

Xeikon defines a suite as having five elements: print engines, substrates, workflow, toners, and finishing elements. At the core of the suite is the Xeikon 3000 Series of digital color presses, designed and developed for the labels and packaging markets. The other elements of the suite, many of which are supplied by the Xeikon Aura Partner Network, are all stringently tested, ensuring customers are fully integrated.

Since the successful launch of the Xeikon 3000 Series of digital color label presses in 2008, Xeikon has developed a strong position in the labels and packaging markets. Key to its success has been a strong Xeikon Aura Partner Network. The company has built a large network with leading industry providers of substrates, workflow solutions, and finishing equipment. In addition, Xeikon has developed a number of production solutions for specific market segments, including the self-adhesive suite for the labels market as well as the heat-transfer label suite for the decorating market.

“Customer intimacy is one of the core tenets at Xeikon. By working closely with our customers since our inception, we’ve learned that they aren’t just looking for a digital press from us. The full production solution is what enables printer service providers to make a finished product,” says Filip Weymans, Xeikon’s Director of Segment Marketing for Label & Packaging. “All the different production solution elements that a printer needs are available in the market. However, to make it easier for our customers, we have built a strong partner network to enable us to bundle specific elements together based on their requirements,” explains Weymans. “This offers our customers the highest level of comfort. They know that the solution will live up to their expectations. Plus, they won’t have to spend time and effort in building the network themselves.”

According to Sean Smyth, Consultant at Pira International, “I took an in-depth look at the digital packaging market for Pira’s study at the end of 2011. Our research indicated strong growth prospects for digitally produced cartons. We forecast worldwide growth rates of over 30% between 2011 and 2016 for digitally printed cartons. Digital technology can significantly help brand owners and retailers improve their supply chains and make packs more appealing to specific groups of consumers, who will buy more and at premium prices. This trend will accelerate and Xeikon’s ability to deliver a very high quality B2 sheet means it is very well positioned to help printers and converters grab a piece of this attractive market space. The decision by several of Xeikon’s label customers to move into cartons should pay rich dividends. In addition, I think some of the security features Xeikon provides will make its technology well suited to pack many short run, high value products.”

Xeikon 3000 Series at core of Folding Carton Suite

At the core of the Folding Carton Suite is a Xeikon 3000 Series press, which has the capability of printing up to 350gsm paperboard (550µ/21.65mil), with a web width ranging from 200mm (7.8”) to 516mm (20.3”). The consumables used in the Xeikon press have been specifically modified to handle the rough structure of paperboard. An in-line densitometer ensures a consistent print quality over time and across the presses.

”The folding carton production environment differs from self adhesive labels in many ways,” says Weymans. “The self adhesive labels are common in a roll-fed environment whereas a carton is a single piece, situated in a sheet-fed environment. The Xeikon press has a distinct advantage in this regard since it’s able to produce sheets of variable length. This minimizes the amount of material wasted,” explains Weymans. “Xeikon has been working in this market for more than 14 years since we first introduced our B2 technology. This has enabled us to gain a wealth of knowledge and experience in folding carton production.”

Pre- and Post-Printing equipment

Xeikon’s jumbo unwinder ensures high levels of autonomy. The unwinder is equipped with a web cleaner, which collects all the excess paper dust generated by paperboard ensuring the press is not contaminated. A web finishing module (WFM) is placed after the press to recondition the paperboard. This unit also holds the cutter unit to convert the web into the appropriate sheets defined by the imposition scheme. Finally, a stacker collects the printed sheets and separates any type of waste in a separate tray.

Workflow designed to drive digital production

The Xeikon press is driven by the X-800 Digital Front End to drive the digital production workflow. The X-800 is built around the Adobe APPE RIP and incorporates post imposition software and color managements tools. To maximize the substrate usage, carton designs are nested on the sheets. This requires special imposition schemes that are enabled by Impactor, an X-800 plug-in.

Substrates

The paperboard substrates incorporated in the Folding Carton Suite are all supplied by members of the Xeikon Aura Partner Network, including M-real, Iggesund, Stora Enso, International Paper and Sappi, none of which need any special pretreatment. All substrates have been certified by Xeikon guaranteeing they will work seamlessly with the Xeikon presses.

Toner and consumables

Xeikon’s QA-I toner, a dedicated toner for the label industry, offers significant benefits in terms of image quality, light fastness and food safety. Alongside the QA-I toner, the Folding Carton Suite includes a range of other certified consumables providing the best solution for varnishing, laminating and other post print processes.

drupa 2012

Customers visiting the Xeikon booth at drupa 2012 will have the opportunity to see the Folding Carton Suite in action. Drupa 2012 takes place in Düsseldorf, Germany May 3-16, 2012. Xeikon will exhibit in Hall 8A, Booth B44.

Quantum technology eliminates the compromise between quality, speed and cost.

Eede, The Netherlands — 7 March 2012 – At drupa 2012, Xeikon will offer the world a sneak preview of the technology the company is currently developing to revolutionize the print industry. Branded “Quantum,” the new technology combines the best of two worlds: electrophotography and inkjet. The revolutionary technology will enable printing at high speeds as well as lower costs, while maintaining the highest level of image quality and eco-sustainability.

Moving forward, this will be the technology platform based on which Xeikon will develop all its future product lines for document printing. For printers, this translates into no longer having to compromise between image quality and productivity/cost.

Xeikon is acknowledged as an innovator in the printing industry. The company was the first to bring production digital color printing to market, the first to offer high-resolution imaging (1200 DPI), the first to offer 50 cm (19.7 inch) web width (B2 format) and the first to offer the benefits of full rotary technology. Xeikon was also the first company to develop dedicated, application-specific toners. With Quantum technology, Xeikon continues this innovation process — driven by the needs of its customers and a deep understanding of what they truly value.

No need to compromise between image quality, productivity, cost and sustainability

For the last few years, the conventional wisdom has been that printers choose electrophotographic (EP) presses for high quality and inkjet for high speed and lower costs. Xeikon’s Quantum technology changes this thinking as it utilizes the best of both and closes the gap between speed/cost and quality. As it is toner based and waterless non-Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) technology, it will also enable printing on untreated substrates. Moreover, it is fully compatible with the existing paper recycling technologies and has the potential to become fully sustainable from a toner composition perspective.

“Some people may ask why we chose this technology,” comments Wim Maes, CEO of Xeikon. “During the past couple of years, we studied the market and its evolution closely. Print quality is king at Xeikon. Our conclusion was that customers were making compromises on quality to achieve lower costs and higher volumes by using inkjet technology. With Quantum, we can deliver on all these objectives. It is a new printing technology capable of running at high speeds and producing high quality output at much lower costs. Recyclability of the printed material and the potential of making it fully sustainable are achievable with Quantum as well,” adds Maes.

Xeikon owns full IP

Quantum technology is based on a technology that Xeikon acquired. Xeikon now owns the full intellectual property rights of this acquired technology. Before Xeikon acquired this technology, significant development time and capital had already been invested in it to make it ready for implementation in a printing press, however it took Xeikon to make it a reality.

Document printing to use Quantum technology

With more than 20 years of experience, and a vast knowledge in paper handling, electrophotography, material handling and toner development Xeikon is uniquely suited to bring this new technology to market.

Quantum technology will be integrated into a new product line targeting the document printing industry. Xeikon has a program ready for existing users to become the first to transition to this new technology, while protecting their initial investments in current Xeikon technology.

Come see us at drupa 2012

Customers visiting the Xeikon booth at drupa 2012 will have the opportunity to learn more about Quantum technology and the planned timelines for product releases. drupa 2012 takes place in Düsseldorf, Germany from May 3 to 16, 2012. Xeikon will exhibit in Hall 8A, Booth B44.

Silvia

Thursday and Friday, October 20/21: Xeikon gathered together a large chunk of the UK’s commercial print users at The Belfry Hotel and Golf Club, just north of Birmingham, with both digital print and little white balls on the menu!

On day one we talked print, digital production, futures, marketing, variable data, and covered a number of other business related topics during a lively session. As suggested by Xeikon’s Patrick Van Baelen at the start of the business session, if all users could take away just one idea that excited them, then the day was a success. Most took away many more than that!

As for the golf? Well, reports suggest that a significant number of Xeikon branded golf balls were distributed evenly across all parts of this excellent course – this could be a new marketing initiative on our part, getting our name known by the UK golf set for many months to come!

I am told that not too many scored a “hole in one” on the golf course, but we look forward to hearing about some significant victories in the world of digital print as a result of our discussions.
